WELLINGTON, (Reuters) – A global New Zealand investigation into child sexual abuse online led to hundreds of arrests and the protection of 146 children.

Ended 2019 saw the discovery of images online by a New Zealand internet service provider. The alarm sounded, prompting an investigation that lasted two years called Operation H.

New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Australian Federal Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the British National Crime Agency, Europol, and INTERPOL collaborated to find and investigate those involved in the accounts.

Tim Houston, director of the digital child exploitation unit at DIA, and chief investigator of Operation H said that many people will view this material.

“It is crucial that we can bring them to justice before more damage is done.”

The DIA reported that 836 international cases had been investigated and that 146 children were safeguarded. In New Zealand, 46 people were detained, with hundreds of others in other countries, such as Canada, Spain, Spain, Slovenia, Britain and Canada.

The National Crime Agency in Britain stated that many of the 450 individuals it arrested had been working as trust employees, such as at nurseries and primary schools, police and law enforcement, medical industry and religious officials.

Houston of DIA stated, “This crime is not a victimless one, whenever this material is viewed that child is revictimized.”
