WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security intelligence office knew in advance of threats related to Jan. 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol but did not notify other law enforcement agencies until it was too late. This was according to an internal review by the department.

The new report from the DHS inspector general paints a critical picture of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A), which it says failed at least three times to disseminate intelligence related to the attack by former President Donald Trump’s supporters.

More than 140 officers and members of the media were also injured in the attack on Capitol.

Ashlibabbitt, one of the rioters was killed when Capitol Police shot her as she tried to climb through a window.

Over 775 individuals have been arrested since the attacks.

“In the weeks before the events at the U.S. Capitol, I&A identified specific open source threat information related to January 6 but did not issue any intelligence products about these threats until January 8,” the report says, adding that some of the missteps came from “inexperienced collectors” who received “inadequate training”.

One example is that a division of a field office tried to share information suggesting that the Proud Boy right-wing group planned to close down Washington, D.C.’s water system on January 6.

Enrique Tarrio was arrested on Tuesday as the former Chairman of Proud Boys. He was only hours away from the release of the inspector general’s reports.

Other cryptic messages uncovered by intelligence-gatherers included people who openly discussed sharing maps of the U.S. Capitol building.

On Jan. 2, 2021, one person shared the following: “I discovered a map listing all entrances and exits from the Capitol building.” I feel that people will actually try to hurt politicians. Jan 6th will prove crazy.

John Cohen (a top official in the Office of Intelligence and Analysis) responded to the report by saying he agrees with its findings and recommendations. These include the need for training and faster reporting of urgent open source threat information.
