REUTERS/Tatyana Makeyeva/File Photo(Reuters) – The Russian-sanctioned businessman sanctioned by the television station said Thursday that Alphabet (NASDAQ) Inc had lost a legal appeal against a 2021 decision that required the company to pay a compounding penalty for blocking YouTube access.
Moscow District Arbitration Court couldn’t provide phone information and didn’t respond to an emailed comment request. Google was claimed to have closed down YouTube in July 2020 by Tsargrad.
Google was disputing a daily 100,000-rouble ($1,050 ) penalty it was required to pay after refusing to remove Tsargrad TV’s YouTube channel, which is a Christian Orthodox channel that Konstantin Malofeev owns.
Moscow Arbitration Court last year stated that Google would have to pay twice the daily penalty for failing to comply with its obligations each week. Tsargrad claimed that Google had already fallen behind 1 billion rubles in fines by mid-March.
Tsargrad released a statement saying that writs for execution were issued and enforcement orders had been filed. He also stated that funds adequate to comply with court acts were seized from Google accounts.
An intensifying conflict between Moscow and other tech companies has resulted in Russia blocking access to Meta Platforms Inc’s most popular social media platform, Facebook (NASDAQ;) and Instagram.
Tsargrad said that the fine would cease compounding once it reached 1 billion Russian rubles. The limit will be lifted starting September.
United States of America and European Union put sanctions on Malofeev for allegedly funding pro-Moscow separatists fighting against Ukraine in 2014. He denied these allegations. Russia regards such Western sanctions as illegal.
Malofeev stated that Tsargrad plans to bring new suits against Google and demand that YouTube’s accounts are unblocked from other countries.
Due to my sanctions, certain local courts won’t support me, as I am in the United States. Malofeev stated to Reuters that they would help us elsewhere.
Google is a global company that exists in India and Brazil. We’ll continue collecting the funds until we get the final court ruling.
