BERLIN (Reuters). Using the Berlin Wall as a metaphor, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Thursday to remove what he described as a barrier between Europe’s “free and unfree”, and end the conflict in Ukraine.

Zelenskiy spoke via videolink to Scholz, appealing to Scholz for Ukraine’s freedom. Zelenskiy also tap Germany’s collective memory, making reference to both the historic 1948-1949 Berlin Airlift, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989.

Zelenskiy described a wall that was “in the middle Europe, between freedom and inequality”, that Germany contributed to building. He said Germany also helped isolate Ukraine due to its business ties and support of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

“And this Wall is growing with every bomb falling on Ukraine, and with every decision that’s not taken,” he said.

Germany stopped the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline project last month. It was intended to bring twice as much Russian gas into Germany.

Zelenskiy spoke to German legislators about Ronald Reagan, former U.S. President,’s plea to Mikhail Gorbachev to demolish the Berlin Wall.

Give Germany the leadership position it deserves so your children can be proud. “Support freedom, Ukraine, Stop this War, Help Us to Stop It,” he said.

Zelenskiy was greeted by lawmakers at the Bundestag with a standing ovation. Katrin Goering–Eckardt, vice president of the chamber, said to him, “Your country chose democracy. That’s what Vladimir Putin fears.”

Her statement that Putin wanted to deny Ukraine the right to exist was false, and she added “But he’s already failed with this.”
