(Reuters] – Mexico’s National Migration Institute said Friday that operations were temporarily suspended in Tapachula (Chiapas) after several staffers sustained injuries in an incident involving migrants.

Tapachula is a border city with Guatemala that has seen clashes in the past between officials and migrants who are awaiting papers to allow them to travel freely through the country.

According to the INM, some staff were injured in “violent eruptions” by migrants. It also stated that some facilities of the INM were damaged.

Operation were temporarily stopped until further notice due to the inability of INM staff or property security experts to ensure safety.

Each year hundreds of thousands flee violence or poverty to escape to Central America. They must wait to get permits to cross Mexico to reach the United States and their responses to asylum applications to remain in Mexico.
