(Reuters) – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated Monday that it was impossible to reach an agreement on the end of war in Ukraine without meeting Vladimir Putin.

Zelenskiy stated in an Interfax Ukraine interview that “I think that until we have a meeting avec the president of Russia Federation…you can’t really understand what they are willing to do to stop war, and what they will do if they aren’t ready for this or another compromise.”

Russia’s attack on Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of thousands, and almost half its 44 million inhabitants have been forced from their homes. Germany expects that the number of refugees could rise to 10 million within weeks.

Interviewed by European broadcast television networks Zelenskiy stated, “It would be impossible at such a meeting to decide what should be done in Ukraine with Russian-occupied territories.”

Zelenskiy stated that while he was ready to discuss the question of the occupied territories at a meeting of the Russian president, he is not certain that there will be a resolution at the meeting.
