TOKYO, Reuters – Japan’s power grid was shut down Tuesday as the government issues its first ever electricity supply warning. The warning urged consumers to save energy after a huge earthquake caused many power plants to close last week.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco), which was experiencing a power shortage due to unseasonably low temperatures in eastern Japan, announced that it will receive as much as 1.42 million kilowatts from seven regional utilities.

Tepco stated that power had been lost to approximately 2,120 homes in the three prefectures around Tokyo despite all efforts.
