Amsterdam-based Prosus NV, owner of Russian online market Avito (OTC:), NV stated Tuesday that they have taken steps in order to delete “a limited number” of ads for positions in the Russian military from Avito.
Prosus operates Avito under its OLX Business, which is the biggest global online marketplace.
Prosus released a statement saying that Russia’s Avito classifieds website hosts over 90 million adverts, and has around 5 million listings each day.
We received a notification that a limited number of military jobs had been advertised through Avito. The problem has since been resolved.”
They did not provide details on the positions.
Prosus spokesperson claimed that Russian military personnel had posted the ads.
Prosus was criticised on social media by some Ukrainians for its job ads. They were angry at the Dutch company’s permission to the Russian military recruit through Avito.
Prosus said that Russia’s attack on Ukraine was an “appalling” event. Moscow claims it is a special military operation. But, Avito, which has 4,000 Russian employees, was decided by the Dutch company to carry on its operations.
On March 7, CEO Bob van Dijk stated to investors that it was wrong for us to hurry out and abandon those people with no livelihood.
Avito’s value was $6 billion before the conflict. Although the company could not give forecasts, Avito said that the Russian rouble’s plunge in value would have an impact on its profitability and valuation.
Prosus, which owns 27% of VK Group’s shares in Russia, has written off that entire stake. The London-listed shares were suspended by the U.S. following sanctions being imposed on the chief executive.
Prosus shares a joint-holding with Naspers South Africa. They share one board.
