(Reuters] – Russia seeks suppliers of baby food packaging and milk products in response to supply disruptions caused by Western sanctions, Dmitry Patrushev from Russia, said Wednesday.

Russia is a large global agricultural producer, however, sanctions placed by Western countries in response to the Ukraine crisis caused disruptions in supply and forced some foreign suppliers out of the market.

Patrushev stated that he was working with trade ministries and business to identify opportunities for replacing foreign packaging suppliers in the dairy and baby foods segments.

Patrushev stated that also the Agriculture Ministry had recommended that the government set up sunflower oil export quotas in order to maintain stability.

Russia and Ukraine are two of the largest producers of sunflower oil in the world. India receives over 90% of its sunflower oil, while India only imports 14%.

After sanctions that weakened the currency and drove food prices up in February and March, many Russians have rush to purchase sugar, wheat and salt.

Authorities have repeated their belief that there’s no reason to store food products.

Russia is completely self-sufficient with its main food staples. Patrushev indicated that sufficient stock is available in warehouses and distribution centers, which are continuously replenished.

He said that the Russian agricultural industry was coping well with a significantly higher demand for food products in general.
