WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States will defend its economic values and economic interests against negative effects of China’s economic policy as it intensifies its focus on state-centered economic systems, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai stated Wednesday.
Tai stated to the House Ways and Means Committee, that Washington’s negotiations with Beijing regarding its non-met purchase promises under Phase 1 of the trade agreement and other non-market policies were “unduly complicated” and needed new tools.
“Going ahead, our strategy won’t be limited to pressing China for changes. It must include vigorously defending the values and economic interests of our country from any negative consequences caused by China’s policies and practices,” she stated.
