Investing.com – Alphabet Inc’s. (NASDAQ:). (NASDAQ:). self-driving car unit, Waymo, said Wednesday that it has started fully autonomous rides for its employees in San Francisco.

The move intensifies the race with Cruise, a General-Motors-backed rival.

According to the company, its San Francisco workers now make autonomous driving part of their lives.

“We’re particularly excited about this next phase of our journey as we officially bring our rider-only technology to San Francisco—the city many of us at Waymo call home,” said Waymo’s Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana.

In a statement, Waymo stated that the company will soon expand to Downtown Phoenix. This expansion will be initiated by Waymo employees who hail trips with independent specialists. It is hoped that the Trusted tester program will soon make it available to the general public.

Since 2020, the company offers public autonomy in Phoenix.
