Walgreens, Rite Aid to start giving second COVID-19 boosters in U.S. -Breaking

(Reuters) – Drugstore chains Walgreens Boots Alliance, (NASDAQ:), and Rite Aid (NYSE 🙂 stated Wednesday that they would offer booster doses for mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations to second-tier drugstore chains after US shots are cleared.
On Tuesday, U.S. officials approved second booster shots Pfizer (NYSE: Moderna (NASDAQ.)’s vaccines are for those 50-plus, using data to show a decline in immunity and Omicron variants of virus risk.
Omicron’s BA.2 variant has caused an increase in infection rates in several countries in Europe and Asia. This raised concern about the possibility of a new outbreak in the United States.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, more than half the COVID-19-related cases in America are caused now by the BA.2 variant.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), also approved a second dose of vaccines to younger patients with impaired immune systems. The FDA approved Pfizer’s and BioNTech, its partner in the vaccine booster shots for adults 12 years and over and Moderna’s for individuals 18 and older.
Rite Aid stated that eligible customers can either walk into a Rite Aid store or make an appointment online starting Wednesday.
Walgreens stated that people can make an appointment for the second shot beginning on Friday. Walk-in appointments are available Wednesday through Friday depending on how many stores have it.
Rival CVS Health (NYSE 🙂 said Wednesday in an emailed statement that it was preparing to administer second boosters.
According to the company, eligible patients are able soon to request an additional dose after receiving their booster dose.
