BlackBerry misses Q4 revenue estimates, cybersecurity unit growth flat -Breaking

(Reuters) –BlackBerry Ltd’s fourth quarter revenue was reported on Thursday. Analysts were disappointed as the company saw growth in its largest cybersecurity business, which is flat, due to decreased competition.

BlackBerry (NYSE: ) is losing ground to bigger competitors such as Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: IBM For cybersecurity solutions (NYSE:), while the slowdown of automotive production is further affecting sales.

John Chen, chief executive officer, said on conference call that slowdowns in the automobile industry, a significant customer segment, will persist.

“Although the automakers expected the situation will improve, they were not surprised.”

The reported quarter saw cybersecurity performance partially offset by increased sales and margin improvement in the IoT business unit. This helped push BlackBerry’s bottom line into green territory.

For the quarter ending February 28, 2011, net income was $144 million. The company posted a loss of $315million last year.

The earnings of the company were 1 cent, which is compared to analysts’ estimates of a loss 4 cents per shares.

The revenue dropped to $185 million, from $210 millions a year prior. According to IBES data collected by Refinitiv, analysts were anticipating $186.8 millions.
