NEW YORK (Reuters) – Oreo cookie maker Mondelez International Inc (NASDAQ:) Trostyanets’ plant, which is located in the eastern Ukraine region of Trostyanets has been damaged by military actions.
It stated that no employee was injured by the attack to its best knowledge. Mondelez employees stated that Oreo was the only Mondelez factory in Ukraine and it was closed immediately after war broke out. Russia invaded Ukraine more than a month ago, in what it called a “special operations”.
According to the United States, this week’s assessment showed that Ukrainian forces had taken back Trostyanets.
Mondelez which produces Milka chocolate in Europe and other European-branded biscuits, stated that it has been difficult to get all its employees connected due to telecommunications problems in Trostyanets. It is working closely with Ukrainian authorities in order to restore water and power to the region and has donated wheat and sugar for local non-governmental organisations.
Mondelez stated that it is not yet clear what will happen next for the plant.
Faced with pressure from Russia to quit, Chicago’s snack company said it would reduce its “non essential activities” while ensuring food supplies. Dirk Van de Put, CEO of the company, condemned aggression and demanded an end to war via a memo posted on his website.
Russia has been criticized for the company’s continued operations.
