WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Enrique Tarrio (the former head of the right-wing organization the Proud Boys) pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges against him. He was accused of conspiring with Congress to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Bidens win in 2020. This accusation comes ahead of last years attack on the U.S. Capitol.
During a virtual hearing held in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Tarrio’s behalf, his attorney filed the guilty plea. A judge announced that the May 18 trial would be postponed.
Tarrio (38) is among the most well-known of 775 individuals criminally charged in connection to the attack on Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 by Trump supporters on the day Congress met for certification of Biden’s victory. Tarrio is charged along with five others from the Proud Boys with conspiring in order to prevent the certification.
Tarrio, however, was not there at the time the attack occurred. According to the prosecution, Tarrio was still an active leader behind closed doors.
A number of right-wing members were also arrested as a result of the Capitol attack. These included Stewart Rhodes, the leader and Oath Keepers militia.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly said Tuesday that he would grant a government request to delay the trial and also added that he would release a written decision later in the day.
Tarrio was named as co-defendant last month. The prosecutors indicated they are open to additional charges and could charge other defendants.
Kelly indicated that Kelly will delay deciding on a new date due to an already packed court schedule and delays from COVID-19. This is because attorneys involved in this case cannot confer at the same time. To finalize the new trial date, Kelly stated that he will hold another hearing in court on April 21.
