UAE Official: ‘Law Enforcement Needs To Be In the Metaverse’
    • A director of the UAE’s Ministry of Interior’s International Operations Department said that “law enforcement has to be in the metaverse.”
    • Security training was conducted in the metaverse by members of the International Security Alliance (ISA).
    • Exercises are 21st-century threats such as drone attacks and cyberthreats.

Major Hamad Khatir, director of the UAE’s Ministry of Interior’s International Operations Department, said during the Security Alliance Virtual Exercise (ISALEX 2.0) that members of law enforcement should be present in the virtual world.

Major Khatir stated that the ISALEX 2.0 security exercise was a success and that more law enforcement should be engaged in the metaverse.

Law enforcement will need to be—and they have to be—in the metaverse. There will be many metaverse things in the future. Law enforcement needs to be prepared for these challenges.

This is related to today’s trend where threat actors continue to become sophisticated with their operations, especially in the cyber and virtual space. A UAE official stressed, however that advanced technology is available to counter these threats.

“We are a step ahead of the criminals,” said Khatir. “We can have the exercise and differences of different locations without getting interrupted. If we have this exercise, every night, we’d need to shut down the airport to let [ISALEX members] come.”

The ISALEX 2.0 was hosted by the UAE Ministry of Interior during Dubai Expo 2020. It brought together police officers from the International Security Alliance member countries for a three-day training event in the metaverse.

Fifty security experts from nine ISA member states, consisting of crisis response teams, cybersecurity officials, and drone experts, gathered in an “operations room” in the Fazaa pavilion. These officials were able to address a range of security issues, such as drone and cyber attacks.

According to Major Khatir, this unique experience aids “international work and coordination by investing in modern technologies” in addressing real-world security threats of the present century.

Major Khatir believes that ISALEX could be a model for non-ISA members, particularly as society moves towards virtualization and digitalization.

Even though more corporations like Ralph Lauren (NYSE) are trying to set up shop in the virtual world of Meta, experts still warn people about potential dangers.
