Walgreens expands its medical-care offerings in major California markets

Walgreens has partnered with Blue Shield of California to open additional Health Corners. It can offer medical care to patients that are billed by the insurance company at the designated spaces.

At Walgreens stores in California, the drugstore chain is previewing how it plans to become a place where more customers go for medical care — not just prescriptions.

This Health Corner offers medical services through a partnership with Blue Shield of California. The company has already opened 12 Health Corners in California, and will open eight more before the end of this year.

The Health Corners, which are located inside stores and can be arranged by a pharmacist or registered nurse to schedule a mammogram or screen for diabetes in high-risk patients or set up high-tech medical devices or equipment.

Chief clinical officer at Walgreens, Dr. Sashi Mooodley said that the designated spaces are “connective tissue” and keep patients in line, particularly when they travel between visits to their doctors.

Walgreens boasts approximately 9,000 retail locations in the US. Moodley explained that it will open Health Corners to patients living in health care deserts, where there is not much access to doctors or high numbers of chronic conditions such as diabetes.

Walgreens opened 48 Health Corners so far. Twelve of these have been opened in California. The company has already opened 36 locations in New Jersey. Clover Health. The company plans to open more than 100 Health Corners by 2022.

Moodley claimed that Walgreens can lower the cost of health insurance by having more interaction with patients at Health Corner locations. Nearly eighty percent of America’s population live within five miles from a Walgreens. Its regular customers include elderly, caregivers and those who have multiple medical conditions. As such, they frequently see their pharmacist more often than their doctor when they get prescriptions.

“You cannot impact patients until you are able to engage, and that’s why we feel we’re well-positioned,” he stated.
