(Reuters) – Dwayne Hakins, a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, died Saturday after being struck by a car. According to a report published on Saturday on the NFL Website.
Haskins was an ex-first round draft pick and was likely to face two other candidates for Steelers’ starting quarterback position after Ben Roethlisberger retired in January. He was reported to be training with teammates in South Florida.
Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin released the following statement: “I am devastated, and at a loss to words with the unfortunate passing Dwayne haskins.”
He quickly made a home in Pittsburgh as he was a part of the Steelers family and was a hard worker on and off the field.
“Dwayne, a fantastic team mate but more importantly, a remarkable friend to many. It is truly heartbreaking.
Washington selected Haskins 15th in the 2019 NFL Draft. However, Haskins was later demoted to third string and was released by the team two years later.
Haskins threw for 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns in 16 games that span two seasons.
Ron Rivera, Washington head coach, stated that Dwayne was an intelligent young man with a long future ahead.
“This is an extremely sad time, and I honestly am at a loss of words. “I know that I am speaking for all of us when I say that he will be greatly missed by our entire team.”
Haskins was signed by the Steelers in 2021, but he did not play any games. Mitchell Trubisky was his quarterback, while Mason Rudolph was the third.
