Dwayne Hakins, Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback was involved in an automobile accident in Florida on Saturday.

Cedric Saunders was Haskins’ agent and he told ESPN of the death. The Steelers issued a statement to extend their condolences.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin stated that he was devastated by the loss of Dwayne Hakins. After his arrival to Pittsburgh, Dwayne quickly became part our Steelers family and was one our most dedicated workers both in the stadium and within our community. Dwayne was not only a good teammate but also a friend and mentor to many. It is truly deeply sad.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Kalabrya and all his family in this time of sorrow.

Haskins, 24, was selected by Washington as their first round draft pick in 2019. He started seven games and went 2-5 when he was rookie. Former Ohio State player, Haskins was 1-5 in six games the following season. He was then released.

Haskins had a chance to restart his career with the Steelers in January 2021. They signed him one month after Washington released him. Haskins was humbled at the announcement and stressed his desire to learn from Mason Rudolph as well as Ben Roethlisberger. Although he was the third-stringer, he only wore one game. He served as backup to Roethlisberger in the COVID-19 protocol.

Both Tomlin, general manager Kevin Colbert and Haskins praised Haskins’s improvement since joining them. In March, the Steelers signed him to a one year contract as a restricted-free agent. Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky were expected to challenge him for the spot.

Colbert declared in January, “We are excited to see Dwayne provide, either by competition or possibly he evolves and becomes a starter.”

Haskins seemed to be in South Florida working this week alongside several of his teammates, which included Trubisky and other skilled position players like running back Najee, Harris, and tight end Pat Freiermuth.
