Covid cases are on the rise again in the U.S., with an outbreak in New York City, Washington, D.C., resulting in high-ranking officials falling ill with the virus during the larger, more deadly omicron BA.2 subvariant epidemic that sweeps the nation.

According to Covid surveillance data released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BA.2 is now responsible for 86% of all new cases. This almost entirely replaces the older version of the omicron which fueled the extraordinary winter surge. According to research from Denmark and the U.K, the BA.2 subvariant can be anywhere from 30 to 80% less transmissible to the older omicron BA.1.

Data from the CDC showed that the U.S. recorded a daily average number of 29,000 new infections on Sunday. That’s a 10% rise over the two previous weeks. However, hospitalizations and infections are still at more than 90% of their peak in January’s omicron surge.

Despite the fact that Covid infections are on the rise, many counties have very low rates of transmission. This means that people living in these areas do not need to use masks indoors according to CDC public health guidelines. White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci claimed this week that Covid would continue to spread in areas for the foreseeable future. Individuals will have to determine how much risk they will take depending on their age, health and other factors.

Fauci explained that the “This Week” ABC program will not show a similar increase in hospitalizations or deaths. Dr. Rochelle Walensky of the CDC stated that Americans have sufficient immunity from prior infection and vaccinations.ovide some protection against BA.2.

It is more prominent in Northeastern areas, which are experiencing a major outbreak. According to CDC data, BA.2 accounts for 92% of all new infections in New York City and New Jersey. According to the data provided by the health department of New York City, New York City reported an average of 1,887 infections per day as of Saturday. This is a 52% rise over the previous two weeks.

Eric Adams, the New York City Mayor tested positive for the virus after awakening with raspy voices on Sunday. Adams attended Washington’s Gridiron Dinner. This annual event brings together journalists and prominent officials. Tom DeFrank of Gridiron Club stated that at least 80 individuals attended the meal, which was the first one since 2019.

Following the dinner, Merrick Garland, Attorney General, Gina Raimondo Commerce Secretary, Joaquin Castro and Adam Schiff, as well as Sen. Susan Collins, all were positive.

White House cabinet officials and high ranking lawmakers were among the first to be infected. Although the incidence of Covid infection in Washington increased 73% within two weeks, overall transmission levels are still very low when compared with the winter surge. The 84% increase in new Covid cases within the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Washington DC, is due to BA.2.

Philadelphia was the first city major in America to reinstate its indoor mask mandate, effective April 18. According to Philadelphia’s health commissioner, Dr. Cheryl Bettigole (the city’s chief medical officer), Covid cases rose by more than half in ten days.
