(Reuters) – A family representing an African refugee who was shot and killed by a Michigan officer at a traffic stop on Thursday demanded that the police dismiss him from his position and bring criminal charges against him. This came just a day after a footage of the shooting was made public.
Patrick Lyoya (26-year-old Congolese refugee and Black) was shot to death in Grand Rapids after he fought with an officer about a stun gun. He has yet to be identified publicly.
Lyoya’s parents spoke through a translator during a Thursday press conference.
Peter Lyoya (his father) said that his heart was broken by the sight of an officer on top of his son, and then to have him shot in his back. I’m asking justice for Patrick.”
According to a statement by the governor, the family fled violence in Democratic Republic of Congo and made their way to the United States for safety in 2014.
Ben Crump is a well-known U.S. civil right attorney representing the family. He stated that the officer had not followed basic training procedures and that fatal force was unjustified.
Referring to the footage, he stated that “another senseless killing by a Black person is being committed in America by people who should be protecting them.” A police officer can turn a minor traffic stop to a dangerous execution.
Crump called again for federal police reform. He noted that Lyoya’s death was one of many police shootings of racial minority groups, along with George Floyd’s and Breonna Taylor in circumstances that could have been deescalated.
Taylor’s mom Tamika Palmer was at the Grand Rapids news conference.
According to the Detroit Free Press, there were hundreds of demonstrations after videos were released. They called for justice and demanded reform in police force.
Lyoya had been driving on April 4 with a passenger in the front. The officer checked her license plate, and found it was different from the vehicle.
The officer attempted to take him into custody. The officer pursued Lyoya for a few feet, ending up on Lyoya’s lawn. Lyoya tried to prevent Lyoya from using her Taser. Video footage is clear.
They had fallen to the ground, when the officer pulled his gun and fired one round in the head of the other. Video footage clearly shows.
Although the officer hasn’t been indicted, he is now on paid leave. He is being investigated by the Michigan State Police.
CNN spoke with Kent County prosecutor on Wednesday to confirm that criminal charges will be decided after an investigation was completed.
