China claimed it carried out military drills in Taiwan as a U.S. Congressional delegation visited the island on Friday. The People’s Liberation Army stated that the move was meant to counter the US’ “wrong signals”.

According to China’s state broadcaster, Shi Yilu, a spokesperson for People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command, China sent fighter, bomber, and frigates to China’s East China Sea area and Taiwan.

Shi explained that this operation was being done in response the the United States’ recent release of incorrect signals on Taiwan. She did not mention any U.S. lawmakers.

The U.S.’s bad tricks and actions are very dangerous and futile. “Those who play with fire are likely to burn,” he stated.

U.S. President Tsai E-wen met Friday with Taiwanese President Tsai Ingwen. Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez said that Taiwan is “a country of global importance” and that its security will have implications for all of humanity.

Menendez was part of a bipartisan delegation of six U.S. senators visiting the Democratic Island in support of the democracy in the face Chinese pressure.

Beijing rejects all suggestion Taiwan is a nation. China views the island as one its provinces.

Although the United States does not have formal relations with Chinese-recognized Taiwan, it is their most significant international supporter and arms supplier.

Menendez admitted that China was unhappy with the visit of the delegation, but this did not stop the group supporting Taiwan.

Menendez said to Tsai that Taiwan is responsible for 90% of all high-end global semiconductor products.

Taiwan was encouraged by U.S. support for democratically-governed islands. The Biden administration has often spoken of its “rock solid” commitment.

This has caused tensions between the U.S. and Sino countries.

Taipei has been alerted by Russia’s invasion in Ukraine to be aware of any moves that Beijing might make to take advantage of the Ukraine crisis and move onto the island. There has been no report from the government of any unusual Chinese activities.

Republican U.S. Tsai heard Senator Lindsey Graham tell him that US opinion has been unites by the provocation of China and the war in Ukraine.

This two-day unannounced trip will take the delegation from Australia to Taiwan on Thursday night. It will be accompanied by Joseph Wu (Taiwan’s foreign minister) and Chiu Kuocheng, Taiwan’s Defence Minister.
