Splinterlands to Decentralize Validator Nodes with New License Offer

Splinterlands is a popular game of play-to earn (P2E). It has now announced it will switch to Splintershards (SPS), validator nodes. SPS Validator Node Software will launch on mainnet during the third- or fourth quarter 2022.

SPS Validator Software will be completely open-source. This means anyone can download, install and use it. However, SPS will charge for the node licences. It will be initially released as a “docker container” that can be operated on Linux machines, with versions for Windows and MacOS to follow soon. It will also require very little hardware to run the SPS validation node.

SPS Governance Mechanism will be based on the DPoS consensus model (Delegated Proof Of Stake), similar to Binance Smart Chain and Hive. Any account holding staked SPS tokens can vote for other validator nodes that are responsible for validating SPS transactions or managing SPS foundation funds. Staked SPS tokens will give validators more blocks and more rewards.

Only a few accounts will be able to get the majority vote and thus the majority rewards in this voting process. To solve this, the Splinterlands team will be offering “licenses,” enabling all users to earn rewards for running nodes without needing to have any staked SPS votes. SPS licenses are available via both SPS tokens as well as VOUCHER tokens. The SPS tokens, as well 100% of the Voucher tokens that were used for acquiring node licensures, will all be burned. After the SPS token limit of 3 billion tokens has been reached, 20% more SPS tokens and 100% of the VOUCHER tokens spent on acquiring node licenses will be burned. The rest will go to the SPS Foundation to be used for incentivizing validator SPS nodes.

Splinterlands will issue a total number of 60,000 licenses, which will be distributed in several phases. After each phase, the license price will continue to rise. The licenses are non-fungible tokens and can be sold, bought and traded on secondary markets. You can use multiple SPS licences using a single validator node. Even if they purchase multiple licenses for SPS, users only have to run validator software one time to receive the rewards.

This represents a significant step in our plan to make Splinterlands a fully decentralized gaming system that players can control and own through their SPS. – Aggroed Rich, CEO of Splinterlands
