SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un witnessed the testing firing of a new type tactical guided gun aimed at boosting its nuclear capabilities. The test was reported by the North’s KCNA State News Agency on Sunday.

“The tactical guided weapon system of new type… will greatly improve the firepower of frontline long range artillery units, and increase the effectiveness in operation tactical nukes of DPRK,” KCNA reported.

DPRK refers to the North’s official title, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Although the KCNA didn’t say the date of the test, the North’s state media often reports the activities of the leader a day later.

It was just a month ago that North Korea had resumed testing of its intercontinental-ballistic missiles, the first since 2017. Washington and Seoul both claim that there is evidence it may soon resume testing nukes.
