LONDON (Reuters – British Prime Minster Boris Johnson will try to forget his domestic woes when he travels to India next week. This is a trip that seeks to improve relations between India’s and Britain’s countries, which are not able to agree on the Ukraine response.

Johnson is set to fly to India Thursday. Johnson was recently fined $90 for violating COVID-19’s lockdown by going to Downing Street for a birthday celebration.

Johnson announced that Johnson would correct the record regarding meetings in his office when Parliament comes back from Easter vacation. He previously stated to lawmakers that no party existed and that all guidance was followed.

Johnson’s office released details late Saturday night, stating that the British leader will use his visit to India to strengthen relations. This includes in-depth discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Mod about the bilateral “strategic defense, diplomatic, and economic partnership”.

As part of Britain’s post-Brexit strategy, he will push for the progress in negotiations on a free trade agreement. He said that such a trade agreement would increase Britain’s total trade to up to 28 Billion Pounds ($36.5 Billon) each year by 2035.

The visit may be overshadowed by the conflict in Ukraine.

Allies from the West have called on India to denounce Russian President Vladimir Putin more strongly. The U.S. President Joe Biden told Modi earlier in this week that India was not interested in buying oil from Russia.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan (British trade minister) also expressed disappointment with India’s last month position. Johnson’s office didn’t make direct references to the conflict. A source however said that they expected Ukraine to be “among other Geopolitical Issues”.

Johnson claimed that India as an economic superpower was highly valued by the United States and is therefore a strategic partner.

He said that “As we face threats against our peace and prosperity by autocratic states,” in a statement. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, he had to cancel his planned trip to India last year.

The two countries signed a partnership last May that involved more than 530million pounds in Indian investments into Britain. Downing Street stated Johnson would announce additional major investment as well as new collaborations on cutting-edge technology and health science.
