(Reuters] – COVID-19 was USA’s third most fatal cause of deaths in 2020, with increasing death rates across all age groups. This is according to a Government study.

The underlying cause or contributor to 460,513 US deaths last year was COVID-19, a jump of nearly 20% compared with 2020. This is according to CDC’s study.

Researchers analyzed data from death certificates for deaths that occurred in residents of the United States between January and December 2013. The 2021 death rate was the highest since 2003. Heart disease and cancer were the leading causes of death.

The report showed that the overall death rate for children aged between 5-14 years was lower than it was among those aged 85 or older. This trend is comparable to 2020. The months January and September saw the highest death rates.

According to CDC data, COVID-19 is associated with 11.4 deaths per 100,000 in the United States by 2021 and 93.2 deaths per 100,000 in 2020. The COVID mortality rates among children aged between 1 and 4 years, as well as those aged 5-14 years were the lowest.

COVID deaths rates rose from 2020 to 2021 for 85-year-olds. Data showed that there were 94.884 deaths from COVID-19 last year in 85-year-olds, compared to 122.707 in 2020.

Researchers found that deaths among those aged below 75 years were on the rise.

Also, the U.S. overall age-adjusted death rate increased nearly 1% between 2020 and 2021.
