WASHINGTON, (Reuters) –Republicans at the U.S. Congress were pleased to hear that Elon Musk, a billionaire was buying property Twitter Inc (NYSE:), while Democrats dismissed it as an indication that legislators had to act faster in order to restrain Big Tech.

Musk (NASDAQ:) and SpaceX’s owner, signed the $44 billion cash agreement on Monday.

U.S. Representative Jim Jordan is a conservative House Republican member of Freedom Caucus. He tweeted: “Free speech making a comeback.”

Jordan and the other Republicans have criticized Twitter for banning Donald Trump’s former president and other well-known conservatives. Trump was expelled because of the potential for further violence following the storming at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Trump stated on Monday, however, that he won’t return to Twitter, even if the account is restored, but would continue on his own social media startup.

Marsha Blackburn (a Republican) said that she was hopeful Elon Musk would help end Big Tech’s past of censoring people who have different views.

However, Senator Elizabeth Warren was a progressive critic and supporter of tech platforms. She called it “dangerous” for democracy.

Elon Musk and other billionaires play by different rules to gain their wealth. On Twitter, she stated that we needed strong rules and wealth taxes to hold Big Tech accountable.

Ro Khanna, Representative of the House said that the agreement was an opportunity to pass legislation to safeguard the personal data of those who use the internet.

Rep. Khanna released a statement saying that safeguards are needed to allow users greater control of their data, and provide transparency and fairness.

Republicans make up a minority of the House that is controlled by Democrats.
