Rivian AutomotiveAccording to Wednesday’s letter from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some electric pickups are being recalled because there is an airbag defect which could cause injury to children in crashes.

Rivian’s total affected is 502 R1Ts, or about 10% total vehicle production to date.

All new vehicles in America must have an airbag system to deactivate the passenger side airbag when there is a child on the seat. Rivian stated that some R1T models may not have the correct system, which could put children in front seats of R1Ts at greater risk for injury in collisions.

Rivian’s service centres will free replace front passenger seats on affected cars. The company stated that affected vehicle owners will be notified by mail on July 1. Owners of R1T vehicles can still check whether their vehicle has been affected by entering the vehicle identification number on the website.
