NEW DELHI, Reuters – Two people were arrested by police in New Delhi for violating fire safety regulations after more than 27 people lost their lives in a fire at a building that houses a surveillance camera manufacturing plant.

The four-story, burning building was located near a train station in western suburbs. Rescue crews worked over the night to remove it.

The fire started on Friday evening and more than 75 were present in the structure at the time. According to eyewitnesses some people leapt from the windows in order to save themselves. The glass was broken by firefighters who then rescued them using ropes.

The fire broke out in the office’s first floor, and quickly spread. In an attempt to find safety violations, the two company owners were both arrested.

In condolences and offering support, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, promised to pay 200,000 Rupees (2.5880 USD) as compensation to the next-of-kin.
