NEW DELHI, Reuters – Two people were arrested by police in New Delhi for violating fire safety regulations after at least 27 victims died from a fire at a building that houses a surveillance camera manufacturing plant.

Overnight, rescue teams cleared the four-story building that was destroyed near the Western suburbs railway station.

On Friday night, more than 75 people were inside the building. According to eyewitnesses some people leapt from the windows to save themselves. The glass was broken by firefighters who then rescued them using ropes.

According to authorities, the fire began in an office located on the 1st floor. It spread quickly. As part of an investigation into safety concerns, two owners were taken into custody.

Prim Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences. He promised compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,580).
