MIAMI (Reuters), – On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that it has halted its search for survivors of last week’s capsize of a ship carrying Haitian migrants. At least eleven people were killed.

On Thursday, the vessel, which was carrying “undetermined” numbers of people, was seen north of Desecheo Island in Puerto Rico. Threety-eight people were rescued by the Coast Guard, including two Dominican Republic citizens.

Capt. Gregory H. Magee was the Commander Coast Guard Sector San Juan.

Many migrants, especially from Haiti, are trying to escape poverty and gang violence through risky voyages on unsuitable ships.
