REUTERS/Stefano RellandiniMILAN (Reuters – After clarification that such a move would not violate sanctions, Eni, an Italian energy company will open accounts to pay for Russian gas this week. Two sources confirmed Monday.
The European Commission updated its guidance Friday to confirm that EU sanctions don’t prevent companies opening accounts at designated banks.
Companies can purchase Russian gas from Russia if they pay in the currency stipulated in their contracts. They must declare that the transaction has been completed once the currency has been paid.
Sources said Eni has been given the go-ahead by clarified guidelines.
