MEXICO CITY (Reuters – Mexico aims for as much as triple the fertilizer it produces, according to Sunday’s announcement by the government. The move is part of a plan to improve local agriculture and reduce inflation.
In line with its efforts to decrease dependence on foreign imports, the government announced that it was increasing production and investing in fertilizer factories.
The national statistics agency posted non-seasonally adjusted consumer price figures that showed a 7.68% increase in April.
During a weekend of talks with farmers, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that a program providing fertilizer free to farmers will be extended to other states such as Campeche and Quintana Roo.
Lopez Obrador stated that “we have to produce organic fertilizer” because it’s very good in principle and natural food is the best. He spoke at an event to promote the government’s effort to improve basic food production.
