(Reuters) – On Monday, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Finland and Sweden shouldn’t be under any illusions about Moscow accepting their membership in NATO. He called it a serious mistake with far-reaching implications.

Two historically neutral power moves would mark one of Europe’s most important changes for decades in Europe’s security infrastructure. This is a reflection of a shift in Nordic regional perceptions after Russia sent many thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 24, 2014.

Ryabkov stated that “the situation is changing dramatically in light of the events.” Interfax quoted Ryabkov. We are very aware of the fact that this decision will not strengthen security in Sweden or Finland.

Ryabkov declared, “They should not have any illusions about how we will accept it.”

The general level of tension in the military will increase, but predictability will decline. Ryabkov expressed regret that common sense was being subordinated to some hypothetical provision on what should be done given the unfolding circumstances.

NATO and USA said Sunday that they believed Turkey wouldn’t refuse to join the Western military alliance.
