Saul Loeb/Pool BRUSSELS, (Reuters) – The European Union will likely make substantial financial contributions to Ukraine, U.S. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen stated on Tuesday. She also said that she would be looking to G7 countries like Canada, Japan, and Britain to help.
G7 central bank governors and finance ministers will meet in Germany on Thursday and Friday, where the Russian invasion is high up on their agenda.
Yellen claimed that the United States made a strong pledge to Ukraine financing and that it was obvious that the EU wanted to help as well.
“We will have to look at other G7 partners — Japan Canada the UK — but I believe the European Union’s significant contribution will be made,” she stated.
Yellen stated that the United States will support European Union efforts to impose an embargo against Russian oil purchases and suggested that the ban on Russian oil purchases, which is being phased in to begin next year could be combined to create tariffs.
“These two things could be combined,” Yellen said to reporters in Brussels. It might be possible for a phase out to be combined with a price mechanism. However, there are plenty of choices. “It is crucial that they decrease their dependence on Russian crude oil,” she stated.
