(Reuters] – Alexandria Aniyah Rubio (4th grader, Robb Elementary) was beaming proudly in a photo her mother posted to Facebook (NASDAQ.) on Tuesday. It showed the little girl with an A Honor Roll certificate for exceptional school grades.
After the photograph was taken, an unknown gunman entered Alexandria’s school and shot and killed the teacher, 18 children, and 2 teachers. It was the most violent shooting at a U.S. school in almost a decade.
Kimberly Mata-Rubio wrote that Alexandria’s mom said she told her they loved her, and would pick them up after school. “This was the end.
Mata Rubio is one of many social media users who shared their thoughts and memories about loved ones killed. It was heartbreaking to see the posts.
Jailah Silguero fourth-grader Jailah Luevanos’ mother, Veronica Luevanos posted on Facebook, Wednesday, saying, “My little girl, this was not your fault.” Jayce Carmelo Luevanos was also among those who were also killed in the shooting.
Faith Mata recalled fondly the times she shared with Tess Mata when she was a child.
Faith posted on Facebook, “Sissy, I miss you so very,”
“I just want hold you, tell you how gorgeous you are.
Texas’s massacre was the most deadly school shooting since 2012, when 26 victims, including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Connecticut, were killed by a gunman.
Uvalde is located in Texas Hill Country, about 80 miles (130km) west San Antonio. It has approximately 16,000 inhabitants, almost 80% of which are Hispanic/Latino according to U.S Census data. Similar to Newtown, Uvalde is a tight-knit community with strong connections between families and friends.
GoFundMe pages were created for families and the community to help raise money to cover funeral costs.
Relatives sought money to pay for the burial of fourth grader Xavier Lopez. They wrote, “We as a family know he’s now with Grandpa Benny at the Kingdom of Heaven.”
From over 3,900 contributions, more than $100,000 has been raised to date. This is far higher than the $17,000 goal.
Requests for comments from Reuters were not returned by family members on Wednesday.
BIG TIGHT HUG
In another social media post, Steven Garcia paid sad tribute to his lost daughter: “Our Ellie was a doll and was the happiest ever… I was gonna DJ for her at her party like she wanted me too!!!”
Garcia received condolences and messages of support. Eli B. Ruiz posted, “She was my little cousin and she was also my girl’s age.”
Remember that Steven Garcia hugged me tightly the day before my father’s funeral. I will do the same.
Erica Mena, a Uvalde resident, also grieved Ellie. Ellie was a member of a youth basketball team. Facebook shared several photos showing the team at games, holding trophies and other moments.
Ellie was the hype girl of our team and the heart and soul. She never missed practice, and she was loudest cheering on her teammates! Mena posted the following on Facebook.
ABC News reports that the shooting also claimed Jacklyn Jaylen and Annabelle Cazares, both ten-year-old sisters.
According to her father, Jackie “was the person who would help others no matter what,” she said. It is comforting to think that Jackie would do anything for her classmates, even in such scary situations.
