(Reuters] – California’s extended drought may result in hydropower producing 8% electricity, compared to 15% for normal precipitation. This was according to U.S Energy Information Administration(EIA), on Thursday.

According to the EIA’s supplemental outlook, the decline in hydropower generation will lead to an 8.8% increase in electricity generation, a 6% increase in energy-related CO2 (CO2) emissions, and an approximately 5% rise in wholesale electricity prices across the West.

California’s energy officials made a grim prediction earlier this month. They said that the grid is not capable of keeping the lights on during heatwaves and wildfires.

On Monday, the Governor of California Gavin Newsom warned that he will order strict cuts to water consumption in California if residents and businesses don’t reduce their drinking habits due to severe drought.

After three months of dry record conditions, California Department of Water Resources (CDWR), reported that April’s snowpack in the state was only 38%.

Six of California’s six hydropower plants were analyzed by the EIA, which represents 22% of California’s total hydropower potential. You can access the entire report on their website.
