LOS ANGELES (Variety.com – Tom Cruise has pulled off one of his most dangerous stunts: getting moviegoers to visit the cinemas for something other than superheroes.
“Top Gun, Maverick,” which had record ticket sales of $134M from 4,732 North American Cinemas in its debut weekend, generated blockbuster tickets sales. Paramount and Skydance are expected to bring in $151million through Monday. It defies expectations, while setting new records for Memorial Day opening weekend sales. This is due to the dazzling reviews and a lot of nostalgia. Cruise was also able to get back into the cockpit for real air stunts with pilot Pete Mitchell.
Cruise’s top-grossing movie, “Top Gun: Maverick,” is his 40th-year-old career. It was also the first time Cruise has earned more than $100 million in an opening weekend. Cruise’s largest opening weekend was “War of the Worlds”, which grossed $64 million in 2005.
Paramount’s 1986 sequel “Top Gun 2” was a huge success. This is despite the fact that this demographic has always been reluctant to go back to the theaters. Positive word-of-mouth should help the film reach younger viewers, many of whom were not around when “Top Gun,” opened in 1986.
David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research is a movie consultant and called the three-day film “outstanding.”
Cruise says that the source material has not changed, but it is still strong. The execution of the film is flawless, and Tom Cruise does a great job making it work.”
Paramount’s “Top Gun”: Maverick continues its stellar record at the box office. It is now the fifth film to be released in first place this year. The 2022 slate of Paramount — including “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “The Lost City”, “Scream”, “Jackass Forever” (worth $57 million in North America), and “The Lost City”) — have been huge hits in theatres. This is a remarkable rebound considering Paramount did not release any films during the pandemic. Instead, they sent big titles such as Chris Pratt’s “The Tomorrow War,” director Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and Eddie Murphy’s “Coming 2 America” to streaming services.
Cruise insisted that Maverick not be made the same mistakes as the “Top Gun 2” sequel. It has received a raving review, proving that the two-year wait was worth it. The film has received a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an “A+ CinemaScore”.
Joseph Kosinski directed “Top Gun” PG-13, which was set decades after the original. In it Maverick trains a group of cocky aviators in order to accomplish a key assignment. Miles Teller and Glen Powell star, as well Jon Hamm, Val Kilmer (who played Iceman in “Top Gun”).
To justify the $170 million budget for “Top Gun: Maverick”, theaters are also needed. This does not take into account the millions of dollars spent on marketing the film to worldwide audiences. These efforts culminated in a spectacular premiere at Cannes Film Festival. Eight fighter jets flew over the Croisette. (The French government funded those). Skydance Media was co-produced with Skydance Media.
Only one movie, Disney’s and 20th Century’s “The Bob’s Burgers Movie,” braved enough to compete against “Top Gun : Maverick.” The movie, which is based on an animated television show, earned $12 million at 3,425 locations, good enough to place third on the box office charts. Memorial Day should see the movie earn $15.3 million.
“The Bob’s Burgers Movie,” which was just behind “Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness,” dropped to No. After three weeks at the top of domestic box office charts, it is now number 2. Disney’s new Marvel Cinematic Universe film saw its first weekend in release drop 50% and earn $16M from 3,805 theatres. To date, the superhero sequel starring Benedict Cumberbatch has earned $375 million.
Number. 4 “Downton Abbey: A New Era” plunged 63% after its debut, earning $5.9 million between Friday-Sunday. By Monday, it is projected to have earned $7.5million from the 3,830 theaters. Two weeks after its debut, the film sequel to the British-famous television series has earned $30 million in North America. It also made $68.9million worldwide. Producing the sequel cost $40 million. This means that the “Downton 2” movie has a long way to go before it hits the big screen.
Universal’s animated heist comedy “The Bad Guys”, which earned $4.6 Million from 2,944 locations, completed the top five. Family-friendly movie “The Bad Guys” should make $6.1 million by Monday. This will take its domestic total to $82million.
