(Reuters] -Sage Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:) and Biogen (NASDAQ.) have announced that the experimental drug used to treat postpartum Depression has achieved the primary objective of a late stage study.

Zuranolone was shown to improve depression symptoms in women who suffered from postpartum depression after day 15.

The secondary goals were also achieved, with improvement in symptoms beginning as early as day three of treatment, compared to placebo.

Postpartum Depression is a condition that occurs following the birth of a child. These symptoms may be similar to depression.

The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately one in eight women will experience postpartum depression symptoms.

It is being also developed to treat major depression disorder.
