LONDON (Reuters – Justin Bieber of Canada is beginning to show signs of recovery from a severe virus that has left his face half paralysed. A specialist in the treatment of facial paralysis said that he had been diagnosed by a surgeon.
Bieber shared a YouTube video that showed him claiming he had Ramsay Hunt syndrome. It affects the nerves of his ears and facial muscles. Bieber noted that his right eye wasn’t blinking.
Charles Nduka is a British consultant plastic surgeon and co-founder of Facial Palsy UK. He said that 75% of those with this syndrome receive treatment early, which includes steroids and antivirals.
Nduka stated to Reuters that he had noticed in Mr Bieber’s video evidence of his recovery.
Nduka stated that facial paralysis can lead to patients being unable or unwilling to open their eyes to blink.
“Before the smile can recover, it is important that there is more harmony in the face when the person is at rest. The nose’s base often rises, while the mouth is more level. The video I shared showed some indications of early recovery.
Bieber (28 years old) said that he couldn’t physically perform the upcoming shows.
Nduka stated that he has worked with patients from the entertainment business and advised them to first treat any immune issues before they return to work.
He stated that “they will be under financial and other pressures to get out as soon as they can, but this will only lead into longer-term problems.”
