WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The number of traffic fatalities in America rose by 18.4% during the first six months 2021 to its highest level since 2006. This is according to the Transportation Department.
According to regulators, traffic deaths rose dramatically following the 2020 coronavirus lockdowns. This is because more drivers were engaging in dangerous behavior such as speeding. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 20,160 Americans were killed in crashes during the first six months in 2021. That’s an increase of 3,140 compared with the 2020 period.
