CHICAGO, (Reuters) – Walmart (NYSE:) Inc announced Tuesday that it will hire over 3,000 U.S. delivery driver and construct a fleet all-electric delivery vans for its new “in-home” grocery delivery service. This is its most recent investment in its last mile fulfillment network.

Retailer said that it now has approximately 100 drivers. It expects to have 30 million customers by year’s end. It currently serves 6 million customers.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart in 2019 launched its InHome delivery service through which workers deliver groceries directly into shoppers’ homes, sometimes placing items straight into kitchens or garage refrigerators when people are not in the house.

A driver unlocks the garages or doors of customers using a unique access code. This is done through an app which pairs with “smart entry” locks.

Many shoppers fear COVID-19 and have turned to ordering groceries online since the outbreak. This has sparked aggressive competition from companies like Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ) Whole Foods, Instacart, and Uber Technologies Inc.

Walmart has explored last-mile delivery possibilities for years. In 2017, for instance, Walmart established a program through which its own store employees would bring online orders directly to shoppers’ homes after completing their usual shifts on sales floors.

Walmart introduced a service that delivers last-mile to other retailers in August just before the U.S holiday shopping season. Walmart also test-driven “last mile” vans with company branding, following Amazon’s lead in online demand. United Parcel FedEx Corp (NYSE 🙂 and Service (NYSE 🙂 are some of the U.S. Postal Service
