Boman Martinez Reid was the TikTok founder. He ignored an email sent by Creative Artists Agency. He was an Ontario native and saw the CAA acronym. It turned out to be CAA Insurance.
He realized that TikTok was trying to court him after his contact with a representative from the company.
“I get a [direct message]Martinez-Reid recalls that the man at TikTok said let’s call on the phone and he agreed. He called me and asked me “I’m aware that CAA is reaching out to my family. Are you familiar with their identities? “They represent Beyonce, Meryl Steep. You need to talk with them on the phone.”
Martinez-Reid is known online as “Bomanizer” with more than 1.5million followers. He also has a budding career, which includes guest appearances on “Canada’s Drag Race” (and a line branded merchandise). He rose to TikTok stardom by making reality-show spoof videos. However, the 24-year old has ambitions beyond social media. In July 2020, he signed with CAA.
Martinez-Reid is one of many content creators signed to traditional agencies. Others include actress Addison Rae, Charli D’Amelio, and Abigail Barlow (creator of “The Unofficial bridgerton Musical”) on TikTok.
Not only are these artists admired for their artistic talent but they also have a strong connection with the online community. The short-form video app is gaining a loyal following, which talent agents and Hollywood agencies see as a gold mine.
This agency can not only help create mini-media empires around creators but they can also use the digital strategies of these influencers to benefit their clients’ careers.
Will Smith is an actor who is represented by CAA. He is not the only A-list celebrity to embrace social media such as TikTok. YouTubeIn recent years, as a means to promote his content or to himself.
David Freeman co-heading the CAA’s digital media division, said “Will realized four or five year ago that young audiences were consuming media in an entirely different way.” Will knew that his interactions with his audience needed to be changed.
The pivotal group, which has an average age of six years to 25 and is also known as Gen Z, is one the most desirable consumer groups for companies. Jason Dorsey is the president of Center for Generational Kinetics. This research-and strategic advisory company focuses on how this generation of consumers will impact older generations.
He said, “This makes the younger generation of trendetters extremely valuable.”
He said that this generation has a significant impact on entertainment as well as apparel, food and larger social conversations.
Dorsey stated that Gen Z is the most reliable predictor of the future. “Smart brands try to find a way to communicate with them honestly. … If you win Gen Z, you can win everyone else.”
Embracing Gen Z
Dorsey pointed out that brands have missed opportunities to connect with the millennials because they ignored their use of social media, and thought that these young people would be returning to old traditions.
He said, “That did not happen.”
Connor Blakley is a Gen Z marketing expert and consultant. While the millennials adopted the internet and a mobile first mentality, Gen Z never knew a time when they couldn’t do nearly everything on a smartphone.
He said, “Everyone says Gen Z has an attention span of six to eight seconds.” This is a really great ‘BS meter for various kinds of information, so we can choose the things that are most important to us.”
Blakley is also a member Gen Z and has provided advice to companies such as Pepsi, Johnson & JohnsonThe National Hockey League and Social Media Marketing Strategies. He said that Gen Z has the ability to discern when people or companies are dishonest.
Dorsey explained that TikTok is where Gen Z is, and therefore talent agencies, marketing agents, influencer agencies, branding agencies all over the world are flocking to it. You can’t reach them if you don’t go where they are.
TikTok has proven to be a great place to find talent for agencies because of the popularity of its content and its virality. Actually, TikTok was the most popular website in 2021The surpassing of even Google, according to data from Cloudflare, a web security and performance company.
Although the social media platform was launched globally in 2017, it gained prominence with users in 2018 and in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Film theaters closed, popular TV programs were stopped and content released slowly to the public. TikTok was popular among those who remained at home and turned to alternative entertainment options like TikTok.
Martinez-Reid declared, “Suddenly, there was a panademic.” “Everyone was locked in. “Everyone was stuck inside. I didn’t have anything to do except to create content, and everybody else only had to look at content.”

TikTok gave Martinez-Reid a new creative outlet. When the social media platform started to become popular, Martinez-Reid was just one semester away of graduating Ryerson University’s RTA Media Production Program. He was eager to get into content production.
“What are you going to risk? Great if the post does well. “If it doesn’t do well, then nobody will know,” he stated.
Martinez-Reid posted his first TikTok in December 2019. It featured Martinez-Reid having an intimate conversation about joining the social media platform with his two last brain cells.
He said that he was simply shooting for an overproduced, scripted and try-hard edge. This was not something TikTok was doing at the time. My content began to be so popular because of that comment. It was like, “I cannot believe this is TikTok” and it just kept growing into more and greater opportunities.
Martinez-Reid is well known for making reality TV spoof videos that poke fun at cast members’ feuding over small details. He explained that even though people felt trapped inside during the pandemic they were able to relate to small irritations which grew into major arguments.
Martinez-Reid still hasn’t made it to Hollywood but he used his CAA connection to meet casting directors at different networks and story producers over the past 18 months. He hopes to learn more about the industry to make better strategic decisions regarding which projects he will sign up for.
Martinez-Reid has a way to go, but it is one that content creators from YouTube and Vine created more than 10 years ago.
“Talent, talent is talent”
Over the last decade, CAA has helped content creators from nontraditional platforms make the transition to Hollywood. Tyler Blevins, also known as Ninja, is a representative of the group. Blevins became famous streaming his videogames. Blevins still plays video games professionally but has appeared on Fox’s “The Masked Singer” and also made an appearance in “The Last Jedi.” Disney’s “Free Guy.”
Arif Zhir was also represented by this talent agency. His YouTube impressions gained him fame and he now voices Cleveland Brown. Fox’s “Family Guy.”
Another notable celebrity to emerge from this area is Justin Bieber who signed with CAA. Usher Braun discovered him and Scooter Braun found him. Liza Koshy also signed for CAA. She now voices Zipp on “My Little Pony: A New Generation.” Bo Burnham who is represented at United Talent Agency has gone from comedy YouTube videos to writing, filming, and staring as a director in the top Hollywood movies.
Frank Jung and Freeman founded CAA’s digital media division nearly ten years ago. “If they’re an incredible talent, that’s number one.”
TikTok, which is still relatively new and yet hasn’t produced as many Hollywood success stories than YouTube over the past decade, experts say it will make an impact in the TV and film industry.
We’ve already seen Addison Rae rise, a 21-year-old who has negotiated a multimillion dollars deal. NetflixAfter starring in streamer’s movie “He’s All That,” a sequel of 1999’s “She’s All That,” she was seen in the September film. William Morris Endeavor Entertainment is her representative and has currently more than 86 millions followers on TikTok.
Charli Di’Amelio (age 17) boasts an audience of more than 133 million on Facebook and has been partnered by brands such as Sabra, hummus maker, for years. Procter & GambleDunkin, and has now her own series on Hulu. UTA reps D’Amelio.
Maggie Thurmon is another celebrity who gained fame through the social media platform dancing and doing circus acts with Dan. UTA signed the 19-year old in February 2020, before her 1,000,000 followers.
She now has over 5 million followers and a podcast named “Mags and Dad’s Wholesome Chaos”. Just recently, her debut feature film, “The Other Zoey,” was completed. It stars Andie McDowell and Heather Graham.
Thurmon said that he was auditioning right now, just hours after completing his set. “I am so excited about the potential of acting in future. This would be my best life.
Thurmon expressed her surprise when Thurmon revealed to her TikTok audience earlier this month, that she plans on pursuing acting in addition to her rapidly growing social media careers.
“I had prepared for any backlash,” she stated. “But, I have not found one negative comment about the TikTok Announcement or Instagram post.”
Thurmon’s story isn’t unique. Dorsey explained that Gen Z TikTok users have built meaningful followings. This allows them to have more support from their creators. They feel that they are supporting them in the work.
This is one of the reasons these content creators are able to influence Hollywood talent agencies.
“Data is new oil.”
Freeman from CAA stated that “it is unique not only to be able to recognize talent but also this talent already has an established audience.” There is an open conversation between audience and talent through social media platforms.
Jung and Freeman believe that these audiences are crucial in providing valuable data on what content people like to consume and the types of content they prefer to be viewed by.
Jung declared that “data is the new oil.” Jung stated, “What we’re trying to do is ensure that we amplify these voices and ultimately create media businesses for our clients. This will leave lasting legacies.”
He laughed and said, “And everyone can make some cash.”
This agency can not only help create mini-media empires around creators but they can also use the digital strategies of these influencers to benefit their clients’ careers.
Smith has campaigned for the best actor nomination for this year’s Academy Awards. Warner Bros.’King Richard, a classic CAA client has taken to social media in an effort to kickstart his next career phase.
Freeman claimed that Koshy taught the actor a lot of his best and most important practices.

The 2018 episode of “The Jump” featured Smith’s 50th-year celebration by jumping out of a helicopter above the Grand Canyon. Underscore Talent’s Dan Weinstein stated that “His career had never been more cold than it was.” It wasn’t nonexistent but it didn’t make him the big-ticket draw that he used to be. He found new audiences. His celebrity persona was remade. It’s not difficult to see that he is gifted and charismatic. He’s using that talent to give new life to all his ventures.
Smith has been a star in several blockbuster movies over the course of five years. Warner Bros.’“Suicide Squad.” Disney’sAladdin is back as an important force at the box-office.
Smith is not the only celeb to follow this trend. Dwayne Smith, Ryan Reynolds Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, and many others have adopted social media to reach fans and promote their projects.
Jung and Freeman have created CAA’s digital division as a platform to bring together the best elements of Hollywood and the ideas of entrepreneurs. Their team is able to take established talent and revitalize their careers. Martinez-Reid is an example of an up-and coming talent that they can use to help build on a strong foundation.
Martinez-Reid has not stopped trying to find his way and CAA isn’t hurrying him.
Martinez-Reid explained, “That is why I love CAA.” They see me as an artist who can build a successful career. These are not quick jobs. “It’s about shaping the next 10 years of my life.”
