(Reuters) – Novak Djokovic stated that he is not against vaccination, but would opt to skip Grand Slam tournaments if he had to get the shot against COVID-19.

Djokovic is not vaccinated. After an 11-day rollercoaster adventure that involved two visa cancellations and two court challenges as well as five nights spent in two stays at the immigration detention center where asylum seekers are kept, Djokovic was forced to leave Australia.

The 34-year old Serbian said that “Yes, this is the price I am willing to pay.” He also stated that he knew that his inability to travel to many tournaments around the globe currently due to unvaccinated status.

Next week will see the return of 20-times champion to the ATP Tournament in Dubai. This is the first competitive match since he was removed ahead the Australian Open.

A win at Melbourne Park where Djokovic won nine titles could have brought him to a record number of major male titles. But it was Rafa Nadal, his longtime rival, who won the title last month.

Djokovic stated that he would sacrifice the chance at reaching the landmark for the freedom of choice, but was open to the possibility of taking the jab later.

He stated that “I never opposed vaccination”, adding that as a child he received vaccines. “But, I support the freedom to choose what your body eats.”
