Chainlink VRF2 v2 is now available on MainnetChainlink today released Chainlink VRF 2.0 (Verifiable random function), the most popular blockchain oracle software. This new and improved version of the industry’s most widely adopted random number generator (RNG) provides an easy-to-use subscription management app for accessing a secure source of randomness while reducing transaction fees by 60%, empowering smart contract developers to build the next wave of provably fair and scalable NFT and gaming applications.

Verifiable and tamperproof randomness is what makes it possible to secure mint NFTs, their attributes, and ensure fair outcomes for blockchain-based gaming. Chainlink VRF already has become the most widely used randomness solution in blockchain, and I think the efficiency advantages of v2 will accelerate its adoption in many other ecosystems.
The randomness that comes from different sources is easily manipulable or susceptible to exploitation. This means that bad actors can manipulate NFT mints and game mechanics in their favor. Chainlink VRF has been created to address this issue. With every new request, Chainlink VRF generates a random number and cryptographic proof of how that number was determined using a combination of unpredictable block data and an oracle’s private key. After the proof has been published on blockchain, it can then be used by consuming apps. These results can be used by consuming applications to verify that they are fair and verifiable.
Chainlink VRF version 2 is now available on Ethereum mainnet. Plans are in place for deployment to other leading blockchains, such as Polygon and BSC. The VRF version 2 release includes major improvements:
- Pay-as you-go subscription management contract makes requests less expensive.
- When there is verifiable randomness, the ability to change the limit of callback gas
- Expansion of capabilities to determine the required number of blocks confirmations for randomness
- An innovative, seamless method to request multiple random number in one on-chain transaction
- Unified billing allows multiple smart contracts addresses to pay their randomness requests using a single subscription account.
