An Amtrak train carrying more than 100 people derailed in Montana on Saturday, killing three people and injuring others, officials said.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Chester, Montana, there was no immediate information on how many people had been injured. However, Chester Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Dave Ghekiere stated that he believes at least fifteen were in hospital.

Amtrak stated in a statement that the Empire Builder train crashed near Joplin (Montana) at approximately 4 p.m. It said that there were approximately 147 passengers onboard and 16 crew members.

According to the railway service, there were two locomotives on board and ten cars. Seven of them got stuck, however. The Empire Builder runs between Chicago and Seattle.

Amtrak announced that they are working together with the authorities to evacuate injured passengers as well as transport them.

The scene was captured in photographs that showed two or three double-decker vehicles on each side. National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Montana, tweeted, “My thoughts are with all the passengers, crew, and first responders on the scene.”

Amtrak reported that Empire Builder service was disrupted Saturday night and Sunday. The westbound train 7, which terminated in Minneapolis, and the eastbound 8 train 8, which originates in Minneapolis, were both affected by the train’s derailment.

Saturday trains that were traveling between Shelby and Minot in Montana on Saturday were cancelled.
