DUBAI, Reuters – The centre of Tropical Cyclone Shaheen landed in Oman on Sunday. It has already claimed at least three lives. Officials urged people to evacuate the coastal regions and delayed their flights to Muscat.
According to the state news agency, a child was killed after being swept away in water. Another person is still missing. The state news agency said that two Asian workers died when their home was destroyed by a mountain in an area of industrial land.
The state news agency reported that a part of the storm’s eyewall, which is the area with the severest weather, reached Al Batinah South Governorate.
To avoid any injuries, the al-Qurm area east of the capital was cut off by the national emergency committee. Emergency shelters were set up for more than 2700.
Muscat is home to most of five million inhabitants, which makes it an oil exporting country. Authorities stated that roads in the capital will be closed to all vehicles until relief efforts are completed.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates stated that precautionary steps were taken. Officials from the United Arab Emirates police were deploying security personnel to patrol areas near rivers and beaches where heavy rains are expected.
The state news agency said that Saudi Arabia’s civil defense authorities advised caution in many areas from Monday through Friday due to heavy winds, which could trigger flooding.
