LONDON, (Reuters) – Climate protesters who repeatedly block traffic on Britain’s most important motorway will face harsher sentences including as much as six months in prison, according to the government on Sunday.

Insulate Britain is calling for the government’s commitment to insulation in 29 million homes. They have set up slip roads and stuck themselves to them, then poured paint on the M25 carriageway, which circles London.

To increase the penalties for blocking a highway, the government stated that it would amend existing laws to include unlimited fines, six-month imprisonment or both.

Police officers will be able to take equipment to lock-on protesters. These measures are to be revealed at this week’s Conservative Party annual conference.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister said in a statement that “This government will always support the law-abiding majority and provide the harshest possible penalties to criminals who purposely bring major roads to an impasse.”

We will grant the police all the power they need to end their selfish and reckless behavior.”

Protesters have claimed that the protest is civil disobedience and that it is necessary to make the government pay attention.
