GENEVA (Reuters), -The World Health Organization (WHO), on Wednesday, said its new advisory group on deadly pathogens could be “our last opportunity” to find out the origin of SARS. China was asked for assistance.

In December 2019, the first cases of COVID-19 in humans were discovered in Wuhan, China’s central city. China denied that any virus had leaked from their laboratories. They have stated they do not need to be visited again.

An WHO-led team visited Wuhan in early March with Chinese scientists. They concluded in a report that the virus was likely to have been passed from bats through an animal, but more research is needed.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is the WHO’s director general. He stated that investigations were impeded by the lack of raw data on the outbreak’s first days and has requested lab audits.

On Wednesday, the WHO announced the 26 members of the Scientific Advisory Group on The Origins of Novel Pathogens. Hung Nguyen was also present as well, along with Marion Koopmans, Thea Fisher, Hung Nguyen, and Yang Yungui, a Chinese expert in animal health, during the Wuhan investigation. [L1N2R91AM]

DZENS OF STUDIES ARE REQUIRED

Maria van Kerkhove is the WHO technical leader on COVID-19 and expressed optimism that China will be given more international missions led by WHO to encourage its cooperation.

At a press conference, she stated that more than thirty-three studies were still recommended to examine how the virus spread from animals to humans.

van Kerkhove indicated that Chinese antibodies tested in Wuhan will “absolutely essential” for understanding the virus’s origins.

Mike Ryan, WHO’s leading emergency expert said that this new panel might be the last chance for the WHO to identify the source of SARS CoV-2. “A virus that has completely destroyed the world,” Ryan stated.

He stated that the WHO wanted to take a step back and create an environment in which scientists can reexamine scientific questions.

Chen Xu of China, the UN ambassador in Geneva said the results of the study were “quite obvious.” He added that since international teams had already been sent twice to China, it was now time to send more teams.

Chen stated, “I believe we should continue the scientific research if it is going to be continued by scientists,” Chen added. We are using the SAGO framework to do any discussion.
