Moderna says an omicron variant vaccine could be ready in early 2022

Moderna’Paul Burton, the Chief Medical Officer at the vaccine company, said that the manufacturer could soon release a new vaccine for the Omicron Coronavirus variant.

There are 30 variants of the spike protein mutation that allow the virus into the human body. Officials warn that these mutations can increase antibody resistance and transmitsibility which may limit effectiveness of current Covid vaccines.

In a statement, the company stated that it had “mobilized hundreds of workers” to begin studying the new vaccine variant.

Burton stated that current vaccines may provide some protection depending on when a person was last vaccinated. He said that people who aren’t vaccinated should be vaccinated, or get their booster shots if they qualify.
